This option is intended for certified teachers wishing to obtain Missouri ESOL certification. Students take five ESOL courses plus the practicum course and an approved elective to meet Missouri ESOL certification requirements.

ESOL focus courses

The 21-hour English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) focus is designed primarily for classroom teachers, grades one through 12, who wish to advance their knowledge, skills and practice of teaching English language learners. There are five ESOL courses (plus practicum and an approved elective) that cover:

  • second language acquisition
  • language and culture for educators
  • methods of teaching English language learners
  • materials for and assessment of English language learners
  • linguistics for educators

Core master's course work

The 12 hours of core course work in this program include study in learning theory, instructional technology, instructional leadership and action research. Courses are designed to enhance the process of teaching and learning in the elementary, middle or high school classroom.

Terminal or comprehensive project

Master of education candidates must complete a terminal project or summative experience at the end of the degree program. The department in which the candidate's major emphasis resides will determine the format of that experience (e.g. comprehensive exam, project, paper, presentation, portfolio or capstone experience). The candidate must be enrolled at the University during the semester in which a master's project is presented or completed.

Students may begin the program as either post-baccalaureate (formerly non-degree-seeking) or degree-seeking.
